Frida's Struggles

Frida's Struggles

Frida went through many struggles during her lifetime. Her first was with polio at age six. This tragedy caused Frida's right leg to become permanently thinner than her left leg.

The bus accident was undoubtedly the biggest struggle that Frida ever endured. Its ill effects lasted for the rest of her lifetime--she had to wear a backbrace and could do very little walking. When not in bed, Frida also spent a lot of time in a wheelchair.

Another major struggle in Frida's life was her marriage to Diego. They had an unstable love-hate relationship, and even divorced in 1940 (but married again after a year). Diego had affairs with several other women, including one of Frida's sisters. Frida, too, had a few affairs with men such as Communist leader Leon Trotsky. Both Diego and Frida were supporters of Communism. Frida was also reported to have had affairs with numerous women, including Georgia O'Keeffe.
