Frida seemed to have an obsession with victimization--her own as well as that of other people. A large number of her paintings displayed the theme of victimizaton. In addition to most of her self portraits, the following two paintings are a good example.
Frida painted this picture based on a news story about a man who stabbed his wife many times, claiming that he had only given her "a few small nips." Perhaps Frida made this painting because she felt that she could identify with the woman--they were both victims of terrible circumstances.
This painting is also based on a news story about a woman named Dorothy Hale, who committed suicide by jumping off of a building. Like Dorothy, Frida was suicidal at points throughout her life and even attempted suicide a few times. Sadly, an official autopsy was never done after Frida's death and it is rumored that she did indeed kill herself.
